Strawberry Swing was released in 2008 on Coldplay's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends CD and released as a single in 2009. It's a pop song with a bit of English jig thrown in that gives it a slight country-genre feel.
Lyrically, the track is apparently one of remembrance of some bright summer days from youth: days that were spent swinging on a strawberry-red swing, and jumping into "...cold, cold water...", and water "fighting" with some pals. Nevertheless, "people" are "...leaving all the time...", and friends move away one-by-one. It's a slightly melancholic work, mixing the joys of exuberant childhood friendship with the sadness that comes from the inevitable changes that the times-and-tides of life dictate. Ultimately, though, the song is rather upbeat, since the savoring of the good times (and thus, the good times themselves) never really ends, and the loss is never really accepted. The song is about loving your friends, and that's always a good thing! After the song's release, an official video was made. This video has been mostly well-received, and is technically quite an accomplishment, but the story that it portrays has basically no resemblance to the work's lyrics. It is fun, though!
